Managing Director Asia - Healthcare M&A

We have offices in Boston, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, and London working with clients throughout the world. We are growing rapidly and to help us with this growth, we are seeking a senior leader to run our Asian practice based out of Tokyo.


Core Responsibilities

  • The role of the Managing Director (MD) is one of helping to sell new clients to find partners and capital in Asia. The MD will be the one with the C-level company and senior investor relationships and is responsible for spearheading marketing efforts. On a live transaction, the MD will manage when difficulties arise in the deal and during high level negotiations. An individual in this role, among other things, sources new deals, manages the delivery of written and oral analyses for engagements, supports the negotiations and structuring of transactions, participates in the due diligence process by overseeing a team of Associates and Analysts during the preparation of diligence materials and financial models, while closely tracking industry trends. New business development activities are essential to furthering our growth and selling is an important piece of the weekly puzzle. The MD will represent at major Japanese and Chinese partnering events, prepare thought pieces, and leverage their personal and profession relationships in support of our mission.

  • This role entails a balance of revenue generation and engagement oversight responsibilities. We will expect and enable you to leverage our and your relationship networks to drive new business and expand client relationships.

  • As a member of our extended leadership team, you will contribute to firm strategy and management, for example, business development and marketing; recruiting, training, and performance management; knowledge management and thought leadership. We will look to you to work collaboratively with us to create a strong team, actively mentor and develop people, manage conflict effectively, and develop trust among a highly motivated team.

  • To assure seamless client relationships and engagement delivery, you will coordinate closely with colleagues in our North American and European Strategic Transactions, Strategy & Analytics, and Capital Markets teams. We measure our success by completed transactions, and providing an integrated corporate development offering to clients is a key way that we achieve this.

  • The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following set of skills:

  • Deep experience working with biotech/pharma companies with full understanding of our industry

  • Strong track record of executing strategic and financing engagements with a robust deal sheet

  • Create and originate new deal flow and new client engagements that fit the strategy of the firm

  • Exceptional ability to frame strategic issues and translate strategic insights to actionable recommendations

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and comfort presenting to client leadership teams and Boards of Directors

  • A proven track record of leading and managing teams including developing team members

  • Solid understanding of finance and deal making

Proven skillset in new business generation capabilities.

  • This position will be responsible for contributing to all new business generation activities, including but not limited to: leveraging personal / professional relationships to expand the business; create high value / high end marketing events and represent or lead Us at major partnering / banking events; identifying potential new business venture prospects / performing initial reviews of business opportunities to present viable opportunities to the senior deal team for consideration; create and manage new deal flow and originate new client engagements that fit the strategy of the firm.

Prior experience that would be successful in this role?

  • Significant years of experience at a boutique or regional investment bank or corporate development role with a biopharma company with demonstrable transaction execution

  • experience is strongly preferred. While execution experience is a must, leading teams to achieve deal throughput is essential for success.
